This was our second visit to Hartford House. The previous visit was in October 2014, when we stayed over-night in one of the small cottages next to the main house. We were there for the debut of the new chef, with a special tasting menu and wine pairing. This time we treated ourselves to a night in one of the luxury houses (Nhlanhla No. 16) overlooking the dam.
The most amazing part is when you open the door and step inside one of these unique homes. They are all different, all exquisitely furnished and come with the most amazing bathrooms! Nhlanhla comes with a copper bath. It is a huge copper bath just perfect for luxuriating in with a partner in crime. Highly recommended it is!
Each little home has its own unique plunge pool, with our unit featuring a rock pool that we took a dip in regardless of the weather. On a boiling hot Midlands day (or night) I can imagine this being a spiritual experience.
The dinner was a lot of fun, complete with nitrogen frozen dessert tidbits. We once again selected the tasting menu for the adventure, along with the paired wines. It was as good as before - with some lovely surprises. However, if you're not adventurous, or have a list of things you do not eat, it's recommended to communicate this before you are disappointed, as some of the items are unusual.
A particular highlight is the opportunity to talk to the chef/s during the evening. It's not something that you usually get to do at any restaurant, but it's great.
Hartford House is highly recommended for an escape. The grounds are beautiful, the accommodation up to scratch, and the food a delight.
