A Warm Welcome and Luxury at Hartford House
Set within a horse stud about some 750m from the road, this former Premier’s residence feels more like a home than a hotel. With no formal reception, we were welcomed after a long evening drive from Durban and ordered dinner although we were an hour late – the rest of many courtesies and examples of personal, but unobtrusive, service we were to experience during our stay.
Our bedroom was a good size and very well appointed, matched by a bathroom of almost equal size. Both were furnished and decorated in timeless early 20th century style, with all mod cons hidden within them. The food was all exceptional and was served on the veranda, which could be enclosed against the elements. Of particular note was the tasting menu with accompanying wines which were brilliantly chosen; the highlight of breakfast was the mealie scones with halloumi and pesto.
It was, however, the staff that made our stay so memorable. All were attentive and friendly, with the senior management leading the way by seeming to have time for everyone and caring deeply about what they are seeking to achieve. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hartford House, and will certainly return when we travel to KwaZulu-Natal again.
